We were way too early to check in so we went into Looe for a look around and have a spot of lunch.
Looe is a busy fishing/touristy sort of place with narrow streets and shops with a nautical theme.
We had a meal at the Ship Inn - Sue had scampi and chips while I had cod and chips - very disappointing.
We then headed off for our accomodation at Penvith Barns - the place is not easy to find at the first attempt and the lanes are really narrow - just single lane with passing places every so often. We found the barns much to our relief and we were greeted by Andrew and Therese the owners who gave us the run down as to where and where not to go.
I'd had enough single lane driving for the day so we walked down to Millandreath beach for some exercise. There was a small bar at the end of the beach so we had a couple of ciders before tackling the walk back. Two things Sue discovered this afternoon 1. She likes the Cornish cider 2. She doesn't do hills.
While we were in Looe earlier in the day we bought a couple of bottle of wine and some Cornish pasties - we had the pasties and a couple of slurps of red wine for supper - just what we needed.
Thursday. First stop after negotiating the footpaths they call roads round here was Polperro and like most of the popular fishing villages we had to park a bit out of town and walk through the narrow streets down to the Harbour.
It's a pretty place with many of the Fishermans cottages dating back to the 1750's.
We had lunch at the Three Pilchards Pub in the beer garden which was up a steep flight of steps - Sue was a bit concerned she might get a nosebleed with the change in altitude but a soothing glass of cider lowered her blood pressure.
Next stop was Fowey and true to expectations the car park was at the top of the village and we had to walk down lots of steep steps to get to the action. Fowey, like Polperro is a beautiful fishing village that (some might say) has unfortunately been discovered by the tourists. I would think that in the Internet age it would be difficult to keep places like this a secret for very long.
Apparently Dawn French has a home here but we didn't see it.
More narrow streets and lots of people many dragging dogs after them.
We were just gathering our strength and girding our loins in preparation for the hike back up to the car park when we discovered the local bus did trips to the car park £1:50 each so without a second thought we hopped on the bus and took a ride to the car park 3 quid well spent !!
All that was left was to hop into our hire car and run the gauntlet of the narrow lanes back to Penvith Barns for perhaps another cider or two.
